What is Grit Blasting?

Grit blasting, also known as Sandblasting, is a mechanical process that removes dust, rust, and impurities from the surface of any object. It is carried out with the help of some form of grit as well as compressed air or water, which is hurled at high speed against the surface of the material.

It is used when an object’s surface has to be cleaned or roughened in order to apply a coating. Grit blasting can be achieved in two ways: pressure blasting and suction blasting.

Different Types of Grit

Depending on the surface of the material, various levels of grit are possible. The most critical aspect of grits for grit blasting is that they be extremely hard and thick in order to exert good pressure on the surface.

Aluminum Oxide Grit is a widely used abrasive media. It is extremely tough, has been recycled several times, and is very hard in comparison to other grits.

Silicon Carbide Grit – Because of its angular grain form, it is also known as hard blasting media. The surface is sharp and neatly cleaned after silicon carbide blasting.

Glass Cuts – The thing about glass cuts is that they come in a variety of variations ranging from coarse to highly polished media, but both work well in giving the surface a new lustrous and reflective appearance.

How Does Grit Blasting Clean All the Surfaces?

Grit blasting is a method in which various forms of abrasive are used in combination with compressed air or water and are violently struck against the surface of the material at a very high speed. As these abrasives collide with both the surface at high speeds, the collision removes numerous undesirable impurities that were lying on the surface. So it basically removes all the garbage that was stuck on the against the surface and gives a new and reflective look to the material. Hence it can clean all the surfaces which are greased, corroded, contaminated or any others.

  • This method is used to clean or prepare the surface for welding, as well as to ensure coating adhesion. As a result, it performs both functions better than any other blasting process.
